The UN Resident Coordinator’s Office (RCO) in Nepal recently partnered with Impact Marathon Series to raise awareness among the general population and stakeholders on the need to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and promote SDGs 4, 5 and 6. The “Nepal International Marathon: The Power of Running” was organized on 26 November 2016 in Nepal, with the aim to harness the power of running, bring people together in support of a cause, build sustainable communities and make a lasting impact in the world.
The RCO sponsored 30 female athletes to participate in the marathon. They were from different districts in Nepal, including Jumla, Kaski and Sindhupalchowk; and some of them are former victims of trafficking for prostitution who now live in a home where they are supported and kept safe. The opportunity of this marathon gave the girls a space to showcase their athletic skills, which translates into meaningful action that will help us achieve the SDGs.
